Types of Fiber Optics

There are two main fiber optics type :-

a. Singlemode or in fiber optics term 9/125 micron
b. Multimode or in fiber optics term 50/125 or 62.5/125 micron

What are those fiber optics terms stand for ?

What is the difference between multimode and single mode fiber?

Multimode fiber has a relatively large light carrying core, usually 62.5 microns or larger in diameter. It is usually used for short distance transmissions up to maximum length of 5 kilometers.

Single-mode fiber has a small light carrying core of 8 to 10 microns in diameter. It is normally used for long distance transmissions more than 5 kilometers in length.

  1. i already used single mode fiber. one thing i need to ask, if possible accessories for single mode be used for multimode fiber? like ferrule, coz last time i already try make sc head using ferulle single mode for multimode cable, fiber up, but dosent have a link. tq

  2. Singlemode size is 9micron.Multimode is either 50micron or 62.5micron. Therefore there is a mismatch on transmitting and receiving of light. If your fiber is SM and your equipment is MM , then you might need a converter to convert light singal from SM to MM. But the cost of the converter is quite high.
